Stories of oppression and terrible diseases, but these nonni's grandchildren will tell their grandchildren about the times, where four Americans came to Casale. You'll all become the stuff of legends, Monica, the memories of you embedded in the community of the future.

Ironically the locals have already knitted us together with their fond memories of “gli American boys!” - some residents in their 90s were kids during WWII and have tales to tell. One nonna had her shin broken by a German bayonet and her father had to walk her down the hill 3 hours to the nearest hospital to have it set. When we showed up with our Italian and English that nonna was beside herself. Gli American boys! Perhaps we already fit somehow into her narrative. In any case I was both amused and grateful.
